Every watch has a crystal of some kind or other. The clear cover of every watch is known as the 'crystal' whether or not it is in fact made of a crystalline substance. The crystal covers the hands of the watch and seals the mechanism against exposure to the elements. Unfortunately, the crystal is exposed to daily wear and tear and yet it is one of the most fragile components of a wristwatch. Without a crystal that is clear, reading the watch would be problematic. Thus, a clear glass crystal provides clear viewing, but is also easily shattered when the watch face is banged against such daily obstacles as door jams. The daily abuse that a watch takes will frequently shatter a watch crystal. Since the invention of the wristwatch, the watch industry has struggled with this constraint. Up until the late 20th Century, most watch crystals were in fact acrylic with the exceptions being mineral glass or expensive sapphire only seen on higher end watches.

TROPIC CRYSTALS

The 'Tropic' crystals are those which do NOT have a 'cyclops' lens. The cyclops is the raised section of the crystal which magnifies the date. Watches without a date function will have Tropic Crystals.

Cyclops Crystals

Born for utilitarian purposes, this polarising innovation was designed to enhance the date aperture and magnify the typical Rolex date display – the Rolex Datejust with its date window was introduced in 1945. Named after the one-eyed giant of Greek mythology, the Cyclops was patented by Rolex in the early 1950s and introduced in 1953 on the Datejust.
