InterMountain has a new model coming out. Likely it is using the same mechanisms as their SD40's so their probably is nothing new under the shell, but a new model is a new model and that is always great to see.
We have tried out their SD40-2's and generally we are pleased with the build quality though they may require a little fiddling to get clean pickup. We expect these new models to have similar quality with respect to running. The detail on InterMountain locomotives has always been nice with high quality metal detail parts supplementing excellent quality printing. InterMountain also claims that they will be designing these models with road name specific details.
The release will consist of 10 road names. Each road name will have either 3 or 4 different road numbers. Each model will come in three versions DCC-Ready ($139.95), DCC ($189.95) and DCC with Sound ($249.95). The expected release date will be Spring of 2018.
Here is what InterMountain has to say:
The SD38-2 was introduced in 1972 and built until 1979. It is the non-turbocharged, 2000 HP version of EMD's very successful SD40-2. The SD38-2 was produced in limited numbers, but found homes on many Class 1 railroads. They were typically used in yard service where low speeds and good tractive effort was required. Almost all are still in service today, with many being refitted as Remote Control yard locomotives. Features: These SD38-2 locomotives will be manufactured with finely molded parts that have been designed to reproduce railroad specific details. Sound units come equipped with an all new ESU® LokSound® Select Micro "Slide-In" sound decoder. Non-Sound DCC units are equipped with an all new ESU® LokPilot® Micro "Slide-In" decoder.
