Transportation Company - Grafton & Upton - Railroad

Company History: The G&U was born in 1888 with the renaming of the Grafton Centre Railroad, a 3’ gauge line in the Grafton, Massachusetts area that had just been standard-gauged. New routes were built to West Upton and Milford. In 1902, they acquired the Upton Street Railway. At that point, the G&U became a combination steam and electric railway. Passenger service ended in 1928 and the trolley wire came down in 1946. Beginning in the mid-1960s, the ownership of the G&U passed through a number of hands ranging from Rockwell International to the Lucey Family – with the railroad deteriorating with time. In recent years, the current owners have been restoring the line. As of this writing, the diesel roster includes two GP7u’s, a GP9r, a GP9, an F7A, a CF7, two S4’s, a 44-tonner, and a slug built from a GP7.
