Company History: Amtrak California is actually part of Caltrans which is what the state government of California calls their department of transportation. It started in 1976 when Caltrans began funding additional intercity train service within the state. With three billion dollars of new funding in 1990, new equipment painted for “Amtrak California” began arriving. Their equipment carries CDTX reporting marks. Amtrak California is responsible for two routes. The Pacific Surfliners run from San Diego as far north as San Luis Obispo. The San Joaquin’s run north from Bakersfield to Stockton where the line splits with some trains continuing north to Sacramento and others heading west to Oakland. The Capital Corridor running from San Jose to Oakland then Sacramento is technically not part of Amtrak California although some of the funding and operating support for this route comes from Caltrains and equipment lettered for Amtrak California is typically used.
Brief History: The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean.
