Company History: The CK&S was built in 1927-1928 to link a sawmill in Kinzua, Oregon to a connection with Union Pacific in Condon, 24 miles to the north. The opening roster consisted of a 2-truck Shay, a Mac railbus and a pair of home road flat cars. CK&S was a common carrier owned by Kizua Pine Mills (who owned the sawmill.) Private logging lines were built, radiating from Kinzua but were not considered part of CK&S. Traffic peaked in 1953, then settled in for a long, slow decline as the focus of timber operations moved further east. This was happening as 50 ton freight cars were giving way to 70 ton cars and finally 100 ton cars. The CK&S roadbed was not up to the challenge and by 1976 the line was riddled with FRA track restrictions. The state of Oregon demanded the line be upgraded if operations were to continue. The last train ran in November of 1976. The mill closed shortly after and by 1979, all of the buildings in the town of Kinzua were gone.
