Transportation Company - Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal - Railroad

Company History: BEDT was established in 1906 under another name to link rail customers in Brooklyn, New York with Class 1 carriers on the other side of the river in New Jersey via extensive carfloat operations. At one point, BEDT maintained six float bridges in Brooklyn plus one in Queens and the one in New Jersey. The rail line, which was never more than 11 miles long, operated with steam power exclusively until 1963 when the fires were dropped in favor of Alco switcher power. In the wake of the creation of Conrail, Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal and New York Dock were combined under a single corporate umbrella although they retained their separate names. By 1983, demand for rail freight service in Brooklyn had dwindled to almost nothing and both BEDT and sister road NYD were closed in August of that year.
