Transportation Company - Alabama Southern - Railroad

Company History: The ABS was launched in 2005 by the Watco shortline group to take over the line from Columbus, Mississippi southeast to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, then northeast to Birmingham from Kansas City Southern. They have about 85 miles of their own track and run on another 37 on trackage rights on the Birmingham end of the line. The heritage of the line is: Mobile & Ohio which became Gulf Mobile & Ohio in 1940, which became Illinois Central Gulf in 1972, who included this line in the spinoff of MidSouth in 1986, who merged with Kansas City Southern in 1994, who spun this line off to Watco's Alabama Southern in 2005.

The Watco shortline group is known for painting locomotives in special schemes for universities and even high schools along their lines. The ABS fleet includes a pair of GP35’s painted for the Crimson Tide.
