Company History: NRI opened in 1994 to takeover operation of the 74 mile line from Chadron to Merriman, Nebraska from Chicago & North Western. Traffic was primarily grain with a bit of timber and gravel as well. They also operated a dinner train on the Chadron end of the line. In 2006, the eastern 43 miles of the line was abandoned. The following year, everything but a 4 mile stump in Chadron was abandoned. NRI continued to run this 4 mile segment of line plus 26 miles of trackage rights on Dakota Minnesota & Eastern (later Rapid City Pierre & Eastern) to reach the BNSF mainline at Crawford. In 2010, the new Nebraska Northwestern bought the Chadron to Dakota Junction segment but NRI retained their trackage rights on the route. In 2013, traffic on the Nebkota had fallen to nothing and the Nebraska Northwestern bought the remaining line.
