Texas & Northern

Company History: The T&N was established in 1948 to connect parent Lone Star Steel’s mill in Lone Star, Texas with the Louisiana & Arkansas mainline just east of Daingerfield. Although less than 8 miles in length (with a total of 32 miles of track,) traffic on the T&N has been heavy. Limestone and iron ore from nearby mines was delivered to the mill. T&N also received coal from Oklahoma via the L&A interchange. They shipped beneficiated ore, steel ingots, steel pipe and well casing. Up to two dozen locomotives have worked the line at a time. The mill, now owned by U.S. Steel Tubular Products has since been converted to a mini-mill, melting scrap to make ingots and pipe. In addition to the USS mill, T&N serves A&A Coating, Friedman Pipe, Lone Star Specialties and Texas Tubular. The railroad is now owned by the Transtar family of shortlines.
