Model Information: This Model Power stock car is a Chinese knock-off of the Atlas 40 foot Cattle car that was produced in the 1970s. Likely this car first appeared in the 1980s when Model Power contracted with various Chinese manufacturers to replicate various body style from other manufacturers. The mold detail and printing are pretty good, and if you replace the trucks with some MTL Bettendorfs, it will run great on a modern layout. The models are marked 'HONG-KONG' on the underframe.

A similar model was produced by Mehano for Model Power. The Mehano models are marked 'Made in Yugoslavia' on the underframe. The Model Power Chinese re-run uses the same road names and numbers as the earlier Mehano run. The Chines models also use the same stock number, as the Mehano run. However, there are visible differences between the Yugoslavian and Chinese models such as the number and company plates on the sides.
Prototype History:
Alonzo Mather, a Chicago clothing merchant who founded the Mather Stock Car Company, designed a new stock car in 1880 that was among the first to include amenities for feeding and watering the animals while en route. Mather was awarded a gold medal in 1883 by the American Humane Association for the humane treatment afforded to animals in his stock cars. Minneapolis' Henry C. Hicks patented a convertible boxcar/stock car in 1881, which was improved in 1890 with features that included a removable double deck. George D. Burton of Boston introduced his version of the humane stock car in 1882, which was placed into service the following year. The Burton Stock Car Company's design provided sufficient space so as to allow the animals to lie down in transit on a bed of straw. All-wood 40' stock cars of this general type would most likely have seen service in the early part of the 20th century (say, 1910-1930).

Road Name History:
The Union Pacific Railroad (reporting mark UP) is a freight hauling railroad that operates 8,500 locomotives over 32,100 route-miles in 23 states west of Chicago, Illinois and New Orleans, Louisiana. The Union Pacific Railroad network is the largest in the United States and employs 42,600 people. It is also one of the world's largest transportation companies.

Union Pacific Railroad is the principal operating company of Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE: UNP); both are headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. Over the years Union Pacific Corporation has grown by acquiring other railroads, notably the Missouri Pacific, Chicago & North Western, Western Pacific, Missouri-Kansas-Texas, and the Southern Pacific (including the Denver & Rio Grande Western).

Union Pacific Corporation's main competitor is the BNSF Railway, the nation's second largest freight railroad, which also primarily services the Continental U.S. west of the Mississippi River. Together, the two railroads have a duopoly on all transcontinental freight rail lines in the U.S.
