Prototype History:
The definition of "Maintenance of Way" is the upkeep and repair of a railroad's fixed property (as track and bridges). Railroads have always used specialized and modified rolling stock and motive power for this purpose. Types of equipment run the gamut from snow plows to ballast spreaders to cranes to dedicated passenger cars.

Some equipment is purpose built such as modern ballast spreaders, while other equipment can be modified from revenue generating equipment such as gondolas, boxcars and passenger cars. Usually the equipment is painted in distinctive patterns to clearly indicate that these cars and locomotives are not being used for revenue-generating service.
Road Name History:
The National Model Railroad Association, Inc. advances the global scale model railroading community through education, advocacy, standards, and social interaction.

The National Model Railway Association is an organization focused on the model railroading hobby. It was founded in 1935. It is organized into 18 regions and 150 divisions. Most of the divisions hold regular meetings featuring interesting and informative presentations on subjects ranging from "how-to" clinics to prototype railroad slide presentations. Many also have a regular newsletter for members.

The NMRA organizes a national convention once per year. The location moves from year to year. The conventions offer unique special run cars to attendees.
