Description: Arm Chair
Dimensions: 43" High x 28 1/4" Wide x 30" Deep
Notes: Arm chair attributed to Thomas Affleck, made in Philadelphia. This chair is believed to be commissioned by John Penn, grandson of the founder of Pennsylvania and the colony's new lieutenant governor. The design is based on two "French Chairs" in plate 19 of the third edition of Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director. The carving on the arms and legs of the chair are almost identical to the illustration in the book while the dimensions are slightly larger than the recommendations by Chippendale. The crest rail's serpentine curve with projecting points is usually the shape found on Philadelphia camelback sofas.
